IN THE SPACES BETWEEN
Since the 1980s, Denis Vedelago has developed an artistic practice in which painting, photography, experimental cinema, music and generative systems flow freely into one another. His works unfold through fragments, shifts and resonances, inhabiting a space where documentary slips into fiction, where memory seeps into the present, and where narratives are deliberately left open.
From the outset, his generative video installations have explored montage as a living organism: images, voices, texts and sounds continually recombine, giving rise to unstable forms shaped by chance, repetition and drift. Yet at the heart of these technological systems lies an encounter with the senses: bodies moving through cities, landscapes glimpsed in passing, presences emerging and dissolving within the flow of images.
This same logic of fragmentation runs through his photographic work. His series never form self-contained documentary accounts, but unfold as mental montages in which images converse through distances, tensions and hidden affinities. A silhouette, a quality of light, a worn object or a landscape on the margins becomes part of a drifting, unfinished narrative, akin to memory or dream.
Painting holds a particular place within this trajectory. Even when seemingly absent, it continued to inform his relationship to framing, light, rhythm and matter. Recent series on kraft and rag paper extend this attentiveness to humble materials, direct gestures and forms poised between emergence and erasure. Here, the painterly gesture takes on a physical presence once more—immediate, almost fragile.
What connects these bodies of work is perhaps a shared endeavour: to bring into view what passes between beings, places and images, rather than fix them once and for all. To create open works through which time, memory and the instabilities of the real can move.
