Denis Vedelago is a French artist born in 1963. He lives and works in Grenoble.
Trained in fine arts and art history, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Aix-en-Provence (DNSEP, 1986), before attending the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation in Venice on a scholarship in museology and modern art history awarded by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Alongside his artistic training, he pursued studies in classical music and electroacoustic composition.
Since the 1980s, he has developed a transversal practice bringing together videoart, painting, photography, experimental cinema, installation, sonic writing, and generative systems. Refusing any hierarchy between mediums, his work explores the relationships between memory, landscape, displacement, perception, and fragmentary narrative.
From the late 1990s onwards, he produced several interactive and generative video installations, among them Chaosmos Radicelle (2000), Babel Ritournelle (2001), KM/H (2003), Bribes, Image Tangage, Man with van (2005), Travelling (2007), and In Fabula (2009), a public commission from the city of Villeurbanne.
His work has been presented at the Musée de Grenoble, the Hôtel des Arts — Centre méditerranéen d'art contemporain in Toulon, and at the Medi@terra festival, the Lyon Biennial, and the festival Les Inattendus, among others.
Alongside his installations, Denis Vedelago has for more than forty years developed a substantial body of photographic work, published notably in Parages (Éditions Cent Pages, 2008), as well as a pictorial practice marked by abstraction, the materiality of gesture, and the use of modest supports.
His recent investigations extend this dialogue between image, sound, painting, and temporality through video installations, ciné-concerts, and new photographic and pictorial series.
