WAITING MUSIC (2001) — Album and Video-Sound Installation

WAITING MUSIC is at once a musical work and an installative form, conceived from the outset within a tension between listening and situation. The composition, combining electroacoustic writing and instrumentation, was fashioned as a material held in suspension — traversed by states of waiting, latency, and diffuse circulation.

Presented for the first time as part of the exhibition Petits agencements de fin d'année, conceived with Vincent Prud'homme, the installation took place within a speech therapy practice — an everyday, functional space marked by temporalities of waiting and floating attention. In one of the rooms, a video projection on the floor showed the membrane of a loudspeaker vibrating in synchronisation with the soundtrack diffused throughout the space.

This minimal device engaged a direct relationship between the visible and the audible: sound became movement, vibration became image. At the scale of the spectator's body, this vibrating surface introduced a perceptual disturbance — a materialisation of sound that ordinarily escapes the eye.

The composition articulates electronic textures and instrumental interventions in an unstable equilibrium between writing and drift. Voices, breaths, strings, and percussion appear as fragments — discontinuous presences moving through a sonic continuum in transformation.
