Created in 2025 on 33 × 33 cm sheets of kraft packing paper, Standards extends a body of painting in which gesture, memory, and improvisation occupy a central place. The title borrows from jazz the idea that a single theme can be replayed endlessly without ever being exhausted. Each interpretation becomes a variation, a displacement, a way of allowing the past to reappear within the present.

These paintings function as free reinterpretations. Certain forms return, certain chromatic or rhythmic balances re-emerge from one piece to another, yet always transformed by the immediacy of the gesture. As in jazz, improvisation is not the absence of structure but a way of inhabiting a familiar form in order to reinvent it.

The modest support of kraft paper, already marked by its previous use, receives a direct and rapid painting practice, sometimes rough, where accidents and tensions remain visible. The surface retains the traces of the painting process itself — its hesitations, accelerations, and silences.

Jazz often accompanies the work in the studio. Its movement between constraint and freedom, between listening and surrender, finds a natural echo in this pictorial practice. Standards may ultimately be just that: a series of open variations, a discreet dialogue between painting and music, between repetition and appearance.
