RETURN TO FUNDAMENTALS

Created in 2025, Return to Fundamentals marks a deliberate return to painting after several years more intensely devoted to video, installation, and photography. Yet painting had never truly disappeared. Even at a distance from the medium, it continued to inhabit the gaze, the composition, the relationship to light, rhythm, and material throughout the entirety of the work.

This series of abstract oil paintings on rag paper and kraft paper extends a long-standing attention to simple, modest, almost ordinary materials. The support itself remains essential: it absorbs, resists, reveals its own fragility, and actively participates in the construction of the image. Nothing spectacular is sought here, only a search for precision, tension, and balance.

These paintings reveal affinities with modern abstraction — from Bram van Velde to Willem de Kooning — as well as an attachment to a form of painting in which the gesture remains visible, alive, sometimes unstable. Forms emerge and dissolve, oscillating between construction and erasure.

The title Return to Fundamentals does not suggest nostalgia or retreat, but rather the necessity of returning to something essential: painting with very little, rediscovering the direct encounter with surface, color, and the temporality of gesture. After years of moving between images, sounds, and technological dispositifs, this series reasserts painting as a space of breathing, slowness, and immediate experience.
