IN FABULA

In Fabula is a public commission by Le Rize and the City of Villeurbanne, permanently installed at Le Rize — Centre Mémoire et Société — as a generative video installation. The project emerged from a ten-month collaborative residency developed with Anaïs Escot, Grégory Lasserre, and Anaïs Met Den Ancxt.

The installation takes the form of a circular image projected onto the floor, rotating very slowly around itself. Filmed portraits appear and disappear in a continuous, almost hypnotic movement. As viewers approach the work, words, voices, and fragments of sound gradually emerge, like traces of memory rising to the surface of the image.

More than five hundred inhabitants of Villeurbanne took part in the project by contributing filmed portraits recorded in a “Videomaton”-style booth installed at Le Rize throughout the residency, as well as voices and texts collected through writing workshops and recording sessions conducted over the course of the project. In Fabula thus composes a fragmented and sensitive collective memory, where individual narratives circulate freely, intersect, and resonate with one another.

The work combines audiovisual technologies and multimedia systems involving video, sound, sensors, and custom software development. Yet technology is never conceived as spectacle or demonstration. It becomes a discreet tool placed in the service of a human, sensory, and poetic experience built around presence, listening, and shared memory.
