CUT UP

Composed of more than 24,000 thematically archived digital photographs, Cut Up was created for the 26-part television series of the same name produced by Arte and Quark Productions. The images were used throughout the program to accompany and visually extend the interventions and reflections of Jackie Berroyer.

Conceived as an immense open image bank, the series gathers fragments of reality: absurd details, unintentionally comic situations, urban signs, bodies, objects, visual accidents, and moments of banality made strange through framing or context.

Through this methodical accumulation emerges an observation of everyday life that is at once ironic and tender. The photographs play with displacement, incongruity, and the collision between words and things. Together they form a kind of inventory of the contemporary world, where humor often reveals a quieter and more underlying anxiety.

Without staging, and in close relation to documentary photography and certain vernacular approaches akin to the world of Martin Parr, Cut Up explores the cracks within the visible — all that the eye usually passes through without noticing.

This image archive functions as a fragmentary form of writing: a vast potential montage in which each photograph may become the consequence, counterpoint, or silent commentary of another.
