Chair Inconnue (2006) — Electroacoustic Work for the Dance Performance by Mathilde Monfreux and Anne-Catherine Nicoladzé

This electroacoustic composition was conceived as a sensory material — at once organic and unstable — in resonance with bodies in motion. Rather than accompaniment, the music operates here as a presence: a texture that infiltrates space, moves through gesture, and at times precedes it.

Elaborated from transformed sounds, noisy fragments, and sustained layers held in tension, the score explores a zone of indeterminacy between the carnal and the abstract. It seeks less to describe than to bring forth a sensation — that of a chair, a flesh, not given from the outset but in the process of becoming: altered, displaced, recomposed.

The sonic work was built in close dialogue with the choreographers, echoing the dynamics of the stage space: breathings, imbalances, resistances. From muted intensities to more incisive eruptions, the music cleaves to states rather than forms, opening a perceptual space within which the body may redefine itself.

Chair Inconnue thus proposes a listening experience that draws the spectator into a troubled proximity with the living — a territory in which the boundaries between interior and exterior, between sound and gesture, become porous.
